This was probably the most controversial concert of Pink Floyds career. Despite local protests, they were allowed to play a free concert from a barge in the lagoon opposite St Marks square, from where an estimated 200,000 people watched. The concert was nearly cancelled on July 13th when the city's superintendent of monuments claimed that the vibration could damage buildings. To pacify critics Floyd played at a reduced volume, but there were still claims of damage to marble cladding after the concert. Lamp posts were also broken by fans climbing them for a better view.



The city authorities failed to provide facilities for the visiting fans, many of whom slept in St Marks square. They left behind them 300 tons of litter and feces, which had to be cleared by the army - Nice!



After a 7 hour sitting the council apologized to Venice residents for the inconvenience, promising that no similar concert would ever be allowed.

The alderman in charge of Venice's culture committee, Signor Silvan Ceccarelli, resigned, explaining: "I feel that I have to go, because I am one of the people who gave the go-ahead for this concert ". Despite initially refusing to do likewise, the rest of the council went soon after, leaving the city in the hands of an ad-hoc administration. Over 100 million viewers in 23 countries (Including the Soviet Union, Israel, Yugoslavia and East Germany) saw the show on TV.

Это полу-официальный релиз! На видео существует только в виде пиратских записей, но в очень приличном для бутлега качестве, т.к. запись делали с телевизионной трансляции. Концерт проходил на специально сооруженной для этого огромной плавучей сцене прямо на Гранд Канале перед дворцом Дожей перед аудиторией в 200 000 человек (и около 100 миллионов ТВ-зрителей).



Шоу было на грани срыва, когда 13 июля, за два дня до концерта, мэр города внезапно заявил, что громкий звук может нанести серьезный ущерб постройкам. Pink Floyd пришлось уменьшить уровень громкости во время концерта, однако мраморная облицовка во многих местах все же обвалилась. Также было разбито много фонарей, на которые взбирались поклонники, чтобы лучше видеть происходящее на сцене. После себя фанаты оставили около 300 тонн мусора, убирать который пришлось солдатам.



В результате совет города пообещал, что таких концертов в Венеции больше никогда не будет. Председатель комитета по культуре (а позднее вслед за ним и весь комитет) подал в отставку.
