Charles (Jean Gabin), a sixtyish career criminal fresh out of jail, rejects his wife's plan for a quiet life of bourgeois respectability. He enlists a former cellmate, Francis (Alain Delon), to assist him in pulling off one final score, a carefully planned assault on the vault of a Cannes casino. Bad luck and Francis's lack of professionalism set the caper maddeningly askew, and the stolen cash resurfaces in an unexpected manner. À peine sorti de prison et revenu auprès de son épouse Ginette, Charles, un truand sur le retour, rêve déjà d'un nouveau gros coup. Son ami Mario a en vue un superbe hold-up, celui du Palm Beach de Cannes et, malade, en confie la réalisation à Charles, qui constitue alors son équipe : Francis Verlot, d'abord, jeune délinquant ambitieux et le beau-frère de celui-ci, Louis, un mécanicien qui sera le chauffeur de la petite bande.
