Review taken from Prog Archives:

Well, this is it. I have spent close to a year tracking down every recording from Porcupine Tree I could find (and some at significant expense, I might add!) I have been listening attentively. Oh yes, gentle reader, VERY attentively. You see, I am in my 48th year, and I must say that a more devoted fan of prog there is likely not. Growing up in the sixties and seventies, I waited with great anticipation for new releases from Gentle Giant, Yes, Genesis, ELP, PFM, Camel, Caravan, and many others. It was the prog renaissance! Then came disco... punk... new wave... alt... 80s synth-crap, neo-whatever... proto- this-and-that. Musically, I found little to stimulate and move me like those old, wonderful prog recordings. 30 years later, that was still the case until I heard a little tune called Shesmovedon. Who is this? WHAT is this? So many influences and musical genres fused into one superb 5 minute song! Those haunting harmonies... those lush keyboard washes... acoustic in nature with a metal injection? Yikes... I needed to hear more. I learned the CD was out-of-print, and this just made me even more determined. I found a copy on eBay from a seller in Korea, and my journey to discover Porcupine Tree had just begun. Simply put, I cannot find the words to describe how this recording has affected me. I find every song to be a minor masterpiece... really. While many 90s and new-millenium neo-prog bands (we all know who they are) sound just fine (as I like to play spot-the-influence), these lads are truly the real deal! While a few earlier PT recordings may seem somewhat of a Pink-Floyd re-hash, ambient, or just plain derivative. But lord, Lightbulb Sun, Stupid Dream, In Absentia, Signify, Recordings, and a few others deserve to be listened to, enjoyed, and become a part of one's core music collection. Is it all prog? Nope. Should you care? HELL nope. This is just some of the greatest modern music recorded in decades. Period.
