Rossellini's darkly comic satire showcases the great Italian comic Toto as a barber who is imprisoned for murdering his wife's suspected lover. After twenty years, Salvatore leaves the prison walls to find the world he once knew gone. Salvatore realizes he has no choice but to find a way back to prison where he feels certain he will be happier.









Where is Freedom?

"Neorealist" comedy from Rossellini with the unimitable Toto as a barber who has a hard time adjusting back to society after serving 22 years in prison for a crime of passion.



What's great about this film is the strong theme behind the story. When you're locked away for a long time the real world becomes a dreamlike vision of a paradise. Paradoxically, the world can be the least tolerant place to those just released from prison. Toto's comedy works wonderfully to create a man that experiences this disillusionment even up to the point where the very reasons he had for the crime of passion 22 years ago are questioned.



It's not a masterpiece: some sequences are included for no apparent reason and add nothing to the film, but a good idea, great casting (especially minor parts), good use of dramatic or realistic elements to make the comedy parts seem less "sweet" and, of course, the great Toto make watching this one worth your while. Salvatore es un barbero que ha permanecido 20 años en prisión tras ser condenado por matar al amante de su esposa a causa de los celos. Transcurrido ese tiempo se reintegra en la sociedad, pero para Salvatore no será fácil el cambio después de tanto tiempo de cautiverio.







Un barbiere esce di prigione dopo aver scontato 22 anni per aver ucciso il presunto amante della moglie. Viste le ingiustizie e gli egoismi della società, preferisce rientrare in carcere per vivere serenamente. Con La macchina ammazzacattivi (1948), è uno dei due tentativi di Rossellini di cimentarsi nella commedia di costume. Sostanzialmente non riuscito, quest'apologo sull'ingiustizia e sulla libertà è, comunque, interessante. Girato nel 1952, uscito nel 1954 dopo essere stato manipolato dai produttori Ponti e De Laurentiis. Alcune sequenze girate da M. Monicelli.
