“Wikipedia:

Siouxsie & the Banshees were a British rock band that formed in 1976. Led by the singer Siouxsie Sioux and the bassist Steven Severin, the band's only constant members, the Banshees formed at the advent of the British punk scene and soon became one of the major bands in the post-punk era. Their music influenced a wide range of very diverse bands over the years amongst them The Cure, Massive Attack, Garbage and more recently LCD Soundsystem. The group released a total of eleven studio albums from 1978 to 1995.



The band was originally formed to appear at the first UK based "international punk rock festival". This show was organized by Malcolm McLaren at the 100 Club on London's Oxford Street on September 20, 1976. Other bands on the bill for the night's performances included Subway Sect, The Clash and the Sex Pistols.



"Bromley Contingent" members Siouxsie Sioux and Steven Severin wanted to be exemplars of a fleeting punk purism. With two borrowed musicians, Marco Pirroni on guitars and John Simon Ritchie, later famous as Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols, on drums, they got up on stage by taking the punk ethos to its literal conclusion: creating a conflict with the audience. Their set consisted of a lengthy and chaotic improvisation based around "The Lord's Prayer", which also included lines from songs such as "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles", "Knockin' on Heaven's Door", "Smoke on the Water" and "Twist and Shout". The number lasted twenty minutes and the band split up at the end of the night.”

Pros: Beautiful music, and check out those excellent Banshee portraits.

Cons: Atypical Siouxsie... did they grow up or something?



This was the last Siouxsie and the Banshees album, "The Rapture," from 1995. Banshee fans everywhere hate it so very bitterly. They hear the songs and don't sense any of that familiar raging glitter... no pumping strobe lights, no pointless torture... not even any forbidden candles.

This is just a different type of album for this band. Half of the songs on this album were produced by the accomplished John Cale... that's the Velvet Underground's John Cale, and some of the Banshees' most dedicated listeners do not approve of what he did with their music. But I don't see the problem with him- the other songs were produced by the Banshees themselves and they're equally new and different.



Banshee fans hear something unsettling in this album: an ounce of joy. They don't like the happiness. Siouxsie doesn't do enough screaming. And when she does, she sounds like she's enjoying it, god forbid.

My opinion is that one shouldn't fix what isn't broken, and they've done just that with this album. So, considering that, I should HATE this album... but I don't... I love it. I LOVE it!

Our lineup shifted around quite a bit, especially in the eighties. At the time of this latter-day album the band consisted of Steven Severin, the bassist and dark mysterious songwriter... Budgie, master of percussion... Martin McCarrick, the cellist/pianist/accordionist... Jon Klein, who supplies every kind of guitar sound... and Siouxsie Sioux, the songstress with the voice.



The first track is one that I heard long ago when it squirmed its way onto the radio. I think it was the first time I ever noticed the Banshees. I had heard them before, but had never listened. Then this thing comes on the radio... and while all the Banshee fans were baffled, I thought it was divine. It's called "O Baby," and it's barely recognizable as anything vaguely Banshee-related. You see, it's very very pop, and sounds like an average sugar-coated radio song.

Budgie plays brushes on the drums, and there are two good simple guitar lines. It's glowing and happy! What's more, I have a feeling... could this be a genuine Siouxsie and the Banshees... love song?

"Look at the stars, they're raining down/ Yeah, even these jewels want to kiss your crown/ Don't be afraid, it's just your face/ Has that effect on heaven's treasure case/ O Baby, O... O maybe..."



They slam the door (finally!) on this album with a little bit of self-mutilation in "Love Out Me." It's the last chance they ever had to sound like what they used to, and they succeed. She gets to yell like a... well, like a banshee.



All right. Obviously I was more impressed with this album than a good portion of the world's Banshee fans. They didn't think this was appropriate at all. I find musical evolution easiest to accept when done tastefully, or when done by a band that can pass off their corny stuff as brilliant.
